Athlete of the Week

Carl Mickelson: The Chandler Hamilton senior made a statement with a double win at the Chandler Wolves Classic Invitational last weekend. Wins in the 200 individual medley and the 100 breaststroke gave the Husky bragging rights for now. He outdueled Phoenix Pinnacle state hopeful Robert Barrett in both races — a special matchup since Pinnacle is in Class 5A-II.

Week in review

Haley Krakoski of Phoenix Xavier is a prime example of just how fast times have been this season. Normally, the elite prep swimmer competes in the spring and early summer and then gets a break before the high school season. That means most of the regular season is spent in hard workouts, gearing up for the end of the year to peak at the state meet. And that usually results in the fastest times being clocked at the championships in November. But the Gator junior swept the 100 and 200 freestyle at the Wolves Classic last week, beating U.S. Swimming Trials participants Traycie Swartz and Ashley Evans in the process. Both of her times (1:50.77 in 200, 50.86 in 100) were automatic All-American standards and both would have placed her second at last year’s state meet. How much faster can she get over the next six weeks? “Haley is a lot faster this year then she was at this point last year,” Xavier coach Colleen Murphy said. “At our Invite last year she was 1:52.4 in the 200 free and lost to Ashley Evans. They were both faster this year.” Oh, by the way, Phoenix Brophy’s John Wojciechowski also set a state record in the 100 butterfly during the invitational. It should be an interesting state meet.

Toros reign: The diving competition at the Wolves Classic was held on Friday, and Mesa Mountain View swept the event. Junior Isaac Thurston easily won the boys competition while Paige Hunt (226.40) edged Phoenix Xavier’s Megan Harper (225.20) in girls. Hunt was eighth and Harper fourth at last year’s state meet.

Small wonder: One of the pleasant surprises of the Wolves Classic was the performance of Hayden Thomas of little Tempe Prep (enrollment 200), who outclassed the field in the 500 freestyle. He took the lead from the start and coasted to a four-second victory. “I just wanted to get out ahead of people,” Thomas said. “Swimming in front helps me out a lot.” His time of 4:53.66 would have placed him in the top eight in 5A-I last year at state. “I definitely look at times and judge myself where I am compared to the other swimmers and how I need to work to get up there,” he said.

Looking ahead

The annual Brophy/Xavier Invitational in Phoenix routinely brings the best swimmers in the Valley and a few from Tucson together for a glimpse at what the state meet might bring. Saturday’s event should be no different. Top teams from all classifications including Phoenix Horizon, Scottsdale Chaparral, Phoenix Arcadia and Chandler Valley Christian are among the 35 teams entered. Brophy coach Pat O’Neill said more than 900 swimmers and 100 volunteers will crowd the Brophy Sports Complex facility on Saturday. The meet starts at 9 a.m. at the pool, 2902 E. Campbell in east Phoenix.
