Nick Losole’s performance Thursday earned him a 4A-II boys golf state title. But Losole’s other achievement was the one he wanted to talk about.
“We really wanted to win (the team championship) after coming up short (second) the last couple of years,” said Losole, who shot a 2-under-par 142 in the two-day event at Sundance Golf Course in Buckeye, helping Scottsdale Notre Dame Prep post a winning team score of 586.
Notre Dame’s effort was 60 strokes better than second-place Phoenix Arcadia.
Fellow Saints golfer Max Scordo placed second after shooting the low round of the tournament — a 3-under-par 69 in the final round Thursday.
“Yesterday I got off to a bad start and shot myself out of it,” Scordo said.
“Today I played smarter... I was able to make some birdies down the stretch.”
Scordo, a senior, tallied five birdies Thursday, but a first-round 76 kept him from seriously challenging his teammate. Scordo, who will attend Notre Dame on a golf scholarship next year, finished with a 145.
In all, five Saints golfers finished in the top 10.
Brent Baylon finished third (149), Kevin Gillick fifth (150) and John Dolohanty ninth (160).
Losole credited his progress during the last month as a reason for his success.
“I’ve been working really hard and everything came together,” he said.
The biggest challenge for Losole came early in the final round after bogeying the first two holes.
He was able to settle down and turn in a 1-under 71 finish.
“I tried to take it one shot at a time and put those mistakes behind me,” he said.
Losole added that winning the individual championship had been a personal goal.
He finished second in last year’s tournament.
Chandler Seton Catholic rounded out the top three in the team competition.
Arcadia’s Chad Fogg finished fourth at 150 and the Sentinels’ Ryan Mahoney finished sixth at 157.
