Kyle Smith scored 13 points and Kelly Bardet added 12 as Desert Mountain won its first boys basketball game of the season, topping Desert Ridge 70-49 on Monday at the Jackrabbit Invitational at Mesa High School.

The Jaguars were led by Justin Boykin with 12 points in their first game of the season.

In other games at the Jackrabbit Invitational, Corona del Sol defeated Yuma 81-41, Mountain Pointe beat Glendale 76-46, and Mesa came away victorious over Mesquite 73-66.


Gilbert won its season opener 48-45 over Phoenix Camelback behind a balanced scoring attack in the Salpointe Tipoff Classic at Gilbert High. Jamaal West led all scorers with 15 points for the Spartans.  . . . Peter Rodriguez scored 26 points and Zane Johnson contributed 25 to lead Phoenix Thunderbird to a 68-66 victory over Highland at Gilbert in the Salpointe Tipoff Classic. K.C. Toolson scored a game-high 27 points for the Hawks.  . . . Ty Abbott poured in 21 points for Desert Vista to help defeat Arcadia 85-48 at Gilbert in the Salpointe Tipoff Classic.  . . .

Nick Witherill of Saguaro had a game-high 38 points in its win over visiting Desert Edge, 69-44. Matt Rhodes added 22 points for the Sabercats.  . . . Daniel Johnson posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds in Marcos de Niza's first game, as the Padres defeated visiting Yuma Kofa, 65-52. Waylen Towns had a game-high 16 points for the Padres.  . . .

Kenny Gooden led all scorers with 18 points to help McClintock defeat Glendale Raymond S. Kellis 81-48 in the Chargers’ home opener.


Ashleigh Schoonover scored 17 points in Skyline's 54-35 win over Higley in its third and final game of the day at the Queen Creek Turkey Shoot.

Erinn Goodman added eight points for the Coyotes. Skyline finished the day 3-0, also defeating Show Low 64-31 and Santa Cruz 69-27.  . . . Also at the Turkey Shoot, Vaneisha Smith scored 13 points and Chrystal Willis added 10 as Coolidge defeated Queen Creek 39-34. Larissa Hedger put in 12 for the Bears. Queen Creek beat Desert View 55-11 later to finish the day at 1-1.
