VX Roundup 4/21: Hamilton tennis reaches semifinals

Host and No. 3-seed Hamilton beat No.11 Corona del Sol, 5-1, in the quarterfinals of the 5A Division I boys tennis team state tournament. Corey Rizzi-Wise, Andy Yuwen, Sebastian Vargas, Eric Wang and Akash Pendyala all won their singles matches to earn the five wins necessary to clinch victory. Alex Lawson earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory for the Aztecs loan win. The Huskies will face Brophy in the semifinals on Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Paseo Racquet Club in Glendale.

Baseball

Higley scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to overcome a two-run deficit and beat rival-Williams Field, 8-7, in a 4A-II East Sky game. Brandon Boggs went 3-for-3 with a two run single, double and a triple to lead the Knights. Jamison Gardner was 2-for-4 with two RBI's and Jordan Washburn was 2-for-3 with three RBI's to lead the Black Hawks.

Softball

Poston Butte scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and beat Apache Junction, 7-6, in the 4A-I Desert Sky. Beth Barnes hit a double to score the tying and winning runs in the bottom of the seventh as part of the offensive onslaught. Ashley Martin and Cameron Cassinelli had two RBI each for the Broncos. Amber Phipps got her second win of the season with five strikeouts in a complete game.

Elsewhere in the 4A-I Desert Sky, Queen Creek beat Cactus Shadows, 6-1. Raianna Dobbs had two home runs and five RBI's to lead the Bulldogs. Gracie Goulder was 2-for-3 with a triple for the Falcons.

Saguaro beat Campo Verde 9-8 in a 4A I Desert Sky region game thanks to a run in the 10th inning. The Sabercats scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the game at eight were it would remain until the 10th. Dana Dal Soglio, Jenna Nimtz, and Sami Hansen all had three RBI's for Saguaro. Taylor Secemski got her seventh win of the season in relief. Brielle Romley, Kennedy Garcia and Courtney Kurr all had an RBI for the Coyotes.

Host Red Mountain beat Mesa, 7-0, in a 5A-I Fiesta region game. Breanna Macha pitched seven strong innings with nine strikeouts and zero walks. Siera Phillips had two doubles and three RBI to lead the offense.

Boys Volleyball

Hamilton beat Desert Vista, 25-18, 25-18, 23-25, 25-22 in a 5A I-Fiesta region match. Kevin Gorence had 17 kills and 17 digs, Saige Gonsalves added 16 digs and Christian Montoya finished with 40 assists to lead the Huskies.
