A lot can happen over the holiday vacation. Flu bugs bite and families travel, leaving teams short-handed, but Corona del Sol and Mountain View overcame it all to reach the finals of the Dobson Mustang Soccer Classic girls tournament.

The Toros have a chance to break into the SoccerAZ.com top-10 rankings when they face the second-ranked Aztecs at 11 a.m. today at Dobson.

Mountain View (10-3) earned the trip to the finals with a 1-0 sudden-death overtime win over sixth-ranked Dobson (10-2) at Red Mountain Soccer Park on Friday.

The Toros’ Heidi Ciesielski scored the winning goal off a deflection less than three minutes into the overtime.

“(Paige Christensen) hit a shot that our keeper should have caught but just deflected,” said Dobson coach Greg Johnson. “They had a girl following that put it in.”

Both teams played tough defense in regulation. Danna Cravens had nine saves for Dobson while Nicole Fares had six for the Toros.

“She’s been playing unbelievably this tournament,” Mountain View coach Karine Inoue said. “It was a big win for us. They’re a very good team.”

Corona (12-1-1) had an easier time, taking a 3-0 win over Red Mountain (12-4), which was shackled by the loss of eight varsity players.

“We had half of our varsity missing — two on crutches, six out of town,” said coach Heather Johnson of her seventh-ranked Mountain Lions. “But no excuses, we played badly.”

Brittany Cole led the Aztecs with two goals.

“It was really physical,” the sophomore said. “Pretty hard, but we kept with it and beat them.”

Krista Hoffer added another Aztec goal. Stephanie Phillips had 10 saves for Corona while Kathryn Ford saved 16 for Red Mountain.

Dobson will meet Red Mountain at 9 a.m. in the consolation match, putting the Johnsons on opposing sidelines. The husband and wife coaching duo will meet again on Thursday when the regular season resumes for both teams.
