Scottsdale Desert Mountain went on a 25-4 run in the second half to dominate Phoenix Brophy and capture a 51-32 win in the semifinals of the 5A-I Desert Valley Region boys basketball tournament at St. Mary’s High School Tuesday.

The win avenged two regular-season losses to the Broncos, including a 48-44 defeat a week ago at Brophy.

Desert Mountain will play the winner of the other semifinal — Glendale Mountain Ridge or Phoenix St. Mary’s — on Thursday.

The Wolves, the No. 3 seed, won both regular-season games against Mountain Ridge and split with St. Mary’s.

For Brophy (15-13), a team that had won three in a row heading into the region tournament, the loss likely means the end of its season.

The Broncos, a second seed in the tourney, were 18th in the power rankings going into the contest.

Brophy shot 13 of 43 from the field, only 6 of 25 in the second half, scoring a lone basket in the course of nine minutes at one point.

For the Wolves (17-10), the victory was a shot of confidence after having lost their last two games.

“We needed a win, and this was a good confidence builder as we head into state,” Desert Mountain coach Todd Fazio said.

“We got beat up the last two games, and (Brophy) has given us trouble all year.”

Four players scored all of Desert Mountain’s points: Kyle Smith led all scorers with 17 points, Danny Maman and Colby Wagner both had 12 points, and Danny Franz scored 10.

Brophy led 8-7 after the first quarter, but its shooting woes were already starting.

After the initial quarter, the Broncos would not regain the lead, although they did manage to keep the game close until six minutes were left in the third quarter.

That was when Desert Mountain went on its big run, improving a 22-21 lead to a commanding 47-25 advantage.

“We have to play with even more intensity whomever we play on Thursday,” Fazio said.
