VX Roundup 4/12: Mtn. View duo tosses two-hitter to beat Mesa

Willie Ethington and Tyler Traasdahl combined to throw a two-hitter as visiting Mountain View beat Mesa, 4-0, in a Division I Section III game on Thursday.

Ethington got the start, pitched five innings, got the win and had seven strikeouts to improve his record to 4-1 on the season. Traasdahl pitched the final two innings and had two strikeouts.

Ethington finished 2-for-3 at the plate with a double and two RBI for the Toros (16-7, 9-2). Zack Hyzdu added an RBI.

In other Division I baseball, Basha easily beat Highland, 12-2, in a Division I Section II game. Jamie Westbrook led the Bears with a 4-for-4 effort, including two home runs, a single, double and five RBI. Jordan Peterson led the Hawks with a home run and two RBI.

Host-Mountain Pointe beat Gilbert, 11-5, in a non-sectional contest. Scott Kingery led the Pride (14-8-1) with a home run and three RBI. Josh Moore led the Tigers with three RBI.

Tempe beat Higley, 6-5, in a non-sectional game. Zeke Johnson came up big for the Buffaloes as he pitched a complete game and earned both his and the school's third win of the season. At the plate, Johnson finished 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. The Knights led 5-2 entering the sixth inning but Tempe scored four runs in the inning to come out on top. Brady Hochhalter finished 2-for-3 with a triple to lead Higley.


McClintock came back to beat Marcos de Niza, 8-7, in 10 innings of a non-sectional matchup. The Chargers scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to send the game to extra innings. It stayed tied until the bottom of the 10th inning when McClintock scored the game-winning run. Dynasty Lauvai finished 3-for-3 with three runs scored, a triple and her sixth home run of the season. Ashley Garcia added two RBI for McClintock. Mallory Schneid finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored and a triple to lead the Padres.

Host-Queen Creek beat Campo Verde, 2-1, in a Division II Section I game. Amanda Baldwin pitched a complete game for the Bulldogs and also had a two-run single to lead Queen Creek to victory.

Kristal Whiteside had a home run and five RBI to lead Chandler past Hamilton, 12-5, in a Division I Section II game. Amanda Campbell had three RBI to lead the Huskies.

Desert Mountain pounded out 15 hits in a 10-0 victory over Laveen Betty Fairfax in a non-sectional game. Andy Wellins improved her record to 15-4 and allowed just one hit. Cheyann Tucker led the Wolves at the plate with two RBI.

Jillian Leslie threw a complete game two-hitter as Perry beat Desert Ridge, 10-0, in a Division I Section II game. Becca Aguallo and Sabrina Nieto both finished 2-for-3 at the plate for the Pumas.

Boys Volleyball

Jeff Campbell had 13 kills to lead Highland past Skyline 25-13, 25-10, 22-25, 25-9. Bryce Farabee added 32 assists and four aces.

Hamilton beat Mountain View 25-20, 26-24, 25-20. Taua Bader led the Huskies with 16 kills while Kevin Gorence added 14 kills and eight digs. Zach Melcher finished with 40 assists.

Ryan Moore had 11 kills as host-Perry beat Basha 25-15, 25-12, 25-19. Conor Martin added 30 assists and Kenny McBride finished with six kills for the Pumas (7-4).
