Arcadia runs past Glendale

Phoenix Arcadia used its ground game to hammer Glendale High 26-6 Friday night at Glendale in a 4A nonregion matchup.

The Titans’ ground attack was paced by Pat Schrimsher and his 69 yards on 19 carries and a pair of rushing touchdowns. Arcadia (3-0) finished with 318 yards of offense, 211 of them on the ground as the Titans gained 17 first downs to Glendale’s two.

Arcadia’s defense was stellar as well as it held Glendale to 7 rushing yards on 18 carries and a total of 120 yards of offense.

The game was marked by a case of butterfingers as the teams combined for eight fumbles on the night. Arcadia dropped the ball five times and lost three fumbles while Glendale (1-2) lost the handle three times and gave it away once right before the half.

Schrimsher started the scoring with a 1-yard plunge midway through the second quarter to put the Titans ahead 6-0.

The fumbles hurt Glendale as Arcadia recovered one on the Cardinals’ 14-yard line and turned it into a touchdown pass from Colby Kirkegaard to Joey Artigue with 38 seconds left in the first half to make it 13-0.

Schrimsher scored again midway through the third quarter to make it 19-0 and a Kirkegaard 7-yard touchdown pass to Sean Jarvis closed the Titans’ scoring.

Glendale avoided the shutout when Cardinals quarterback Jason Monroe hooked up with Tyrese McGruder on a 90-yard touchdown pass on the final play of the third quarter.

Vitals: Phoenix Arcadia downed Glendale 26-6 Friday night at Glendale High School to improve its record to 3-0.

Highlight: Glendale (1-2) avoided the shutout by getting a 90-yard touchdown pass from Jason Monroe to Tyrese McGruder on the final play of the third quarter.

Player of the game: Arcadia’s Pat Schrimsher paved the way for the Titans with 69 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 19 carries.

Key stat: Glendale picked up just 7 yards rushing on 18 carries.
