The upward climb necessary to get Phoenix Mountain Pointe into the playoffs has been treacherous the past few years, and it’s not going to get easier.

Already stacked against three perennial postseason players in Chandler Basha, Tempe Corona del Sol and Ahwatukee rival Desert Vista, the Pride will rely on new faces in key places.

Running back Marquese Wheaton graduated. Receiver/defensive back Markus Wheaton transferred to Chandler. Quarterback Brandon Cluff transferred to Laveen Cesar Chavez.

New quarterback Austin Lahr is a two-way threat.

Alex Lewis will anchor the offensive line and all-world runner Will Claye is the offensive anchor. Ryan Noble, T.J. Porti and Tyler Buck will run the defense.

But the team’s heavy reliance on the Wheaton brothers in the past couple of years will give way to a committee approach.

“We have to spread it around to be successful,” Pride coach Phil Abbadessa said. “We have good team quickness, and it’s going to be essential.”

Claye, in particular, should emerge as the team’s all-around weapon. He won the state championship in triple jump and was on pace to be an Olympic qualifier at age 17 before he broke his arm in spring.

It healed in time for him to compete in track in Europe this summer, and the Pride are hoping it translates to the football field.

He’ll be a running back, receiver, defensive back and possibly return kicks.

But the Pride will need more than Claye.

“It’s got to be a total team package for us,” Abbadessa said. “That’s what we talk about, but we don’t know for a few weeks where we’re at.”
