It took about a half for Mountain View to shake off its first loss of the year – and then handed Skyline its first defeat of 2013.
The ninth-ranked Toros rebounded, taking advantage of key mistakes, in a 42-14 win over Skyline on Friday.
“We bounced back. Obviously we were a little sluggish; I think a little hangover from last week, losing a close one. But the kids bounced back and it was a big win,” Mountain View coach Chad DeGrenier said, referring to the Toros’ 28-25 loss to Pinnacle in week five.
On Friday, John Clark threw for 293 yards and four touchdowns, three coming in the second half when Mountain View converted back-to-back possessions to take control with a 29-6 lead in the third.
“We knew we had to come in here and show them who’s who, and we did,” said Clark of the Coyotes, who came into the night 5-0.
Coming off the loss of a week ago, the Toros (5-1) stumbled in the first half on Friday, not quite getting in rhythm and allowing Skyline to move the ball, although they kept the Coyotes to one score, taking a 16-6 lead at halftime.
It should have been more because after Skyline scored on a Michael Amado 10-yard run, Toros’ returner Octavio Reyna ran the ensuing kick back 91 yards but the touchdown was called back on a personal foul penalty. Mountain View had to settle for a 19-yard Luis Bustillos field goal.
“We just didn’t get it done in the first,” Clark said. “We came out ready to play in the second half.
Even the first possession of the second half saw Clark get sacked and led to a punt.
However, it was a booming punt from Bustillos that was mishandled by Skyline’s Truman Tucker, who got turned around on the kick and Mountain View’s Bobby Stewart recovered at the Skyline 36. Clark used the short field to add to the lead, connecting with former quarterback Chase Funk on a 6-yard pass.
The defense got a three-and-out and gave Clark another short field and he needed just three plays to score again. Funk catching a 25-yard throw this time and the rout was on.
“We just need to clean up the mistakes and come out a little faster,” DeGrenier said.
Clark had more success with the short passing game, hitch routes and screens.
Skyline had two interceptions and the fumble and couldn’t get its offense in gear.
