Athlete of the week: Luke Macchiaroli - The Tempe Corona del Sol High School junior, who competed at 217 pounds, gained all-star status at the Warrior Classic at Mesa Westwood High School last weekend for the second straight season.

In order to be an all-star, a wrestler had to go undefeated in eight matches. Macchiaroli is the defending 189-pound state champion and finished eighth nationally at the Cadet Greco-Roman championships last summer.

Beyond the box score

Partners in crime: Macchiaroli was joined on the Warrior Classic all-star squad by Corona heavyweight Trevor Stapp as the Aztecs finished fifth.

Other East Valley wrestlers who made all-star status were Mesa High School’s Ben Horne (189) and Victor Montano (119); Westwood High School’s Daniel Mendoza (112) and Jack Dodge (152); Mesa Mountain View High School’s Dan Cook (135); Nick Hodgeman of Gilbert High School (189); Chandler Basha High School’s Ryan Jimenez (152); and Casa Grande High School’s Aaron Belloc (140).

Because of the 16-team tournament’s format — two pools in a dual-match round robin with the top two finishers facing each other, the No. 2 finishers squaring off, etc. — it was possible for more than one wrestler to go unbeaten in a weight class.

Not surprisingly, champion Safford High School, a 3A school, had the most all-stars with four — Ryan Finch (105), Jon Cases (130), Nathaniel Abril (145) and Tyrell Andrews (160).

Safford coach Herman Andrews said he always likes coming to the Westwood tournament.

“It’s great a way to get better at the beginning of the season,” he said. “You know you’re going to get eight tough matches.”

While many of the local powers were at Westwood, Mesa Dobson spent the weekend in Las Vegas competing in the 28-team Sierra Vista Duals. The Mustangs finished second, losing in the final to Cimmeron-Memorial of Las Vegas.

Dobson wrestlers Kadeen Holam at 160, Britt Mullenaux at 171 and Kyle Henson at 189 went unbeaten.

Looking ahead

A little rest: No dual meets are scheduled for 5A teams. In 4A, rivals Queen Creek High School and Gilbert Higley High School will meet Monday afternoon at Higley.
