Mesa Desert Ridge found its new boys basketball coach by promoting from within the district.

A Gilbert Unified School District spokesperson said Tuesday that Greg Ream, the junior varsity coach at Gilbert High last season, has been hired to replace Robb Floco, who resigned last month.

Ream takes over a program that went 17-11, the first winning campaign in school history, and reached the quarterfinals of the 5A-II state tournament.

Ream couldn't be reached for comment.

SETON LOSES FOOTBALL COACH

Chandler Seton Catholic has started a search for a new football coach after Rodger Schenks resigned Monday to take a job at Mesa Red Mountain, Seton athletic director Bob Bitler said.

Schenks will be the Mountain Lions' offensive coordinator, Red Mountain coach Jim Jones confirmed. Schenks was previously an assistant at Red Mountain from 1997-2000.

"I think he'll bring a lot to our program," Jones said. "He's a good person, (has) good character and is a good football man as well."

Schenks went 2-8 last year, his only season with the Sentinels, who moved up from 3A to 4A-II in 2007. In 2002, Schenks guided Globe to the 3A state title.

The rest of Seton's football staff is expected to return.

Bitler said he hopes to have a new coach in place by July 1 and until then, he will oversee the program.

"I'm very sad to leave, this was not an easy decision, Schenks said. "... Seton was a great place to teach. Seton has a great community."
