Fourth-seeded Brophy edged No. 5 Desert Ridge, 2-1, in the third round of the Division I state baseball tournament at Camelback Ranch-Glendale Stadium.

Brophy will play No. 8 Hamilton at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday at Phoenix Municipal Stadium. Desert Ridge moves to the losers' bracket where it will face No. 6 Mesquite at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday at Camelback Ranch-Glendale Stadium.

Mesquite also fell into the losers' bracket after it fell to No. 3 Glendale Sandra Day O'Connor, 5-1, at Phoenix Municipal Stadium. O'Connor will play No. 2 Chaparral at 4 p.m. on Saturday at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.

Division II

An interference call by the umpire helped send the second-seeded Saints to the loser’s bracket of the Division II state baseball tournament in a 5-4 loss to Tucson Salpointe on Thursday night.

Trailing 5-4, Notre Dame had the bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the seventh when Sam Griffen hit a grounder to short that was fielded by Salpointe’s Ray Eastman, who threw to second baseman Ryan Ramsower for the second out.

Ramsower then relayed late to first but the umpire called interference, awarding Salpointe the final out.

Notre Dame (18-13) faces an elimination game Saturday at Surprise Stadium at 7 p.m.

The Lancers (24-7) kept Notre Dame’s big guns, Kobie Foppe, Daniel Ziemann and Duncan Morfitt, to just two hits among them. They all came into the game hitting over .400.

Notre Dame starter Devon DeRaad allowed two runs in the first and didn’t get out of the fourth, trailing 4-2.
