Tuesday roundup: Chaparral blasts past Salpointe

Host Chaparral easily beat Tucson Salpointe Catholic 12-2 in first-round pool play Monday of the Cleats National Baseball Invitational.

Danny Coulombe pitched six innings, allowing two hits and striking out eight. He improved to 5-0.

Jake Schlander had three hits, including a home run and three RBIs. Royce Bolinger had a double and three RBIs to lead the Firebirds (11-2).

BASEBALL

In other Cleats tournament games, Tim Alderson struck out 13, walked one and hit a home run in Phoenix Horizon’s 6-0 win over Las Vegas Bishop Gorman. The win maintained both Alderson’s (6-0) and the Huskies’ (16-0) perfect records. …

Justin Rosales had two hits, including a home run, but it was not enough as host Hamilton fell to Highland (Calif.) High School 7-5. Hamilton jumped out to a 2-0 lead after three innings and led 5-4 entering the seventh inning, but Highland scored three runs in the seventh to put the game away. …

Damien Wilken pitched a complete game with six strikeouts as visiting Skyline beat San Luis 3-2 in a 5A nonregion game. Kyle Pietryga had two RBIs, with two doubles on two hits to lead the Coyotes (4-11). …

Saguaro opened play in the Greenway Festival tournament with a pair of wins. In the first game, the Sabercats beat Dakota Ridge (Colo.) 4-1. Matt Anderson pitched a complete game with no walks, and one run on five hits. Scott Zuloaga had a double on two hits. In the second game, Saguaro beat Timberline (Idaho) 9-2 led by Chris Horvitich’s two-RBI performance.

SOFTBALL

Heidi Purtzer had a great game at both the plate and the mound for Scottsdale Christian as the Eagles rolled past Arizona Lutheran 20-0 in a 2A Metro Region game called after five innings. Purtzer, who was relieved by Kacie Lyding in the fourth inning, helped hold the Coyotes to no hits. She also had a grand slam and a solo homer. Alex Petznick added two doubles for the Eagles. … Bree Ensminger had a homer and two RBIs as host Red Mountain beat Yuma 5-1 in a 5A nonregion game. Bella Renteria added a single and a triple on two hits for the Mountain Lions (11-2-1).
