No. 1 Chaparral beat Goodyear Millennium, 3-2, in the first round of the Division I boys soccer state tournament.

The top-seeded Firebirds (15-2-1) survived a major scare from the No. 16 Tigers thanks to a goal in the final 90 seconds by Boston Kimmel.

Kimmel broke a 2-2 tie with a goal in the corner of the net after winning a battle for the ball. Millennium actually led, 2-1, early in the second half until Thomas Cairns tied the match with about nine minutes left.

Will Ellis scored the first goal of the match in the first half for Chaparral. The Firebirds will host No. 8 Chandler on Saturday at 2 p.m. in the quarterfinals.

In other Division I boys playoff matches, No. 8 Chandler beat No. 9 Phoenix Alhambra, 1-0. Andrew Layton scored the game's lone goal in the first half for the Wolves (12-5-1).

Luis Manta scored two goals to lead No. 4 Hamilton past No. 13 Westview. Jordan Fletcher also scored a goal for the Huskies (20-3). Hamilton will host Phoenix Carl Hayden on Saturday at 2 p.m. in the quarterfinals.

No. 6 Brophy shut out No. 11 San Luis, 5-0. Riggs Lennon scored three goals for the Broncos (19-2-1) and David Lane and Ryan Grotjohn added a goal each. Brophy will play at No. 3-seed Gilbert on Saturday at 2 p.m. in the quarterfinals.

No. 16 Mountain View fell to No. 2 Phoenix Maryvale, 2-0, in overtime.

Division II

No. 3 Marcos de Niza continued its superb season by beating No. 14 Phoenix Washington, 1-0, after winning 3-2 in penalty kicks.

Neither team was able to get on the score board in regulation and in overtime both teams had goals called back, as the Padres goal was called back on an offsides call.

Victor Sanchez made three saves for Marcos (13-0) including Washington's final penalty kick in an attempt to tie the shootout. The Padres will host the winner of Catalina Foothills and Independence on Saturday at 2 p.m. in the quarterfinals.

Matt Kaldawi scored two goals to lead No. 7 Notre Dame past No. 10 Mohave Bullhead City, 2-0. The Saints (13-3) will travel to No. 2 Verrado on Saturday at 2 p.m. in the quarterfinals after Verrado topped No. 15 Queen Creek, 5-0.

Division III
