Desert Mountain High School seniors Erin Greenberg and Chad Goldstein have gone to the same school since kindergarten.

In fact, no one dominated the Laguna Elementary School playground like Greenberg, especially when she teamed with Goldstein for a little two-on-two basketball.

"She was better than all of us. When Erin came on the court we were afraid," Goldstein said. "We'd take on kids two-on-two. We kicked some butt."

After 13 years of playing on the same court — albeit on different teams — the duo will split after graduation. Greenberg signed a national letter of intent to play shooting guard at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa., and Goldstein signed to play power forward at UC-Davis. When they reach their destinations, they will become the first Desert Mountain graduates to play Division I basketball.

They were just two of more than 20 East Valley seniors who signed letters of intent during the week-long early signing period, which began Wednesday. Today is the final day athletes can sign until the spring.

Mesa High swingman Lee Cummard and McClintock point guard Jermaine Calvin probably signed the week's highest-profile letters of intent. They signed to play basketball at Brigham Young and Utah, respectively.

"I loved everything about (BYU). The only thing I'm afraid of is the cold weather," said Cummard.

Several local high school programs sent multiple players to the next level.

Fresh off their state 5A volleyball championship, Gilbert's Jen Christian, Whitney Webb and Jessica Endres signed with Texas, Utah and Utah Valley State, respectively.

The Desert Mountain baseball team, a state 5A semifinalist last year, had Josh Satow, Willy Fox and Austin Stockfisch sign with Arizona State. Defending 5A state softball champion Corona del Sol had Cathy Walters, Whitney Lebowitz and Katie Laing sign with Ohio, Kent State and Notre Dame, respectively.

"They work so hard for so long and this is their reward," Corona coach Jeep Ray said. "So now they can relax a little bit and just focus on softball. The decisions are done."
