Jaci Hull has been a lethal weapon at the plate all season for Horizon and that hasn’t changed in the postseason.

Hull started Horizon on the way to victory Monday night with a two-run single and added another RBI single in a five-run fifth that paced the Huskies to an 8-1 victory over host Red Mountain (29-7) in the second round of the 5A state softball tournament.

Horizon also got another strong pitching performance out of Ashley Smuda, who scattered seven hits.

Horizon (30-5) will play in Wednesday’s quarterfinals at a time and site to be determined and against an opponent to be determined today. The Huskies will face either Sierra Vista Buena or Peoria Sunrise Mountain. Those teams played to a 0-0 tie after 12 innings when their game was suspended by darkness. They will resume that game today at 10 a.m. If Sunrise Mountain wins, the game will be played at Rose Mofford Park. If Buena wins it will be played in Tucson at the University of Arizona.

"This team is so determined right now," Horizon coach Blaize Gatti said. "They took the loss last week (1-0 to Desert Mountain in the region tournament final) pretty hard. They want to make sure it won’t happen again. It’s good to be peaking this time of year."

Hull, who is headed to UNLV next fall, ripped an 0-2 pitch with the bases loaded and two out from Mountain Lions starter Dana Johnson in the second inning to put the Huskies ahead 2-0. Smuda made sure that lead held up through four innings. She got out of two-out, two-on jams in the third and fourth.
