Ashley Dreas of Phoenix Mountain Pointe defeated Katie Crossman of Phoenix North Canyon to win the singles title Saturday at the 2007 Mesquite Badminton Tournament at Mesquite High School.
The tournament featured 15 schools and eight rounds of competition, including a consolation bracket and a third-place match.
Dreas rolled over Crossman in straight sets, 11-6, 11-10, after beating top-seeded Amy Cappuccio of Chandler in the semifinals.
Olivia Li of Chandler finished third after handing Cappuccio her second straight loss, 11-4, 11-10. In the consolation bracket, second-seeded Ariel Marlor of Chandler Hamilton overcame a second-round loss by defeating Olivia Evans of Gilbert, 11-4, 11-2.
In the doubles tournament, the top-seeded team of Alheli Jacquez and Guadalupe Farfan of Chandler dominated second-seeded Carrie Zhao and Amy Davis of Tempe Corona del Sol, 15-5, 15-11, in a much-anticipated match to win the tournament.
Jacquez and Farfan did not drop a set during the entire tournament.
Kathryn Cantrill and Mellisa LeBlanc of Mountain Pointe won the third-place match, beating Kristen Morrissey and Kelsey Lafko of Chandler, 15-8, 15-6.
Bri Tomasson and Molley Imsuchart of Gilbert Mesquite defeated Kelley Klein and Sarah Judd of Phoenix Shadow Mountain in the consolation finals.
Notre Dame Prep (68) won the Paradise Valley Relay Invitational for the second consecutive year, edging host Paradise Valley (65). Glendale Sandra Day O’Connor finished third with 53 points, followed by Glendale Deer Valley (50), Phoenix North Canyon (46), Peoria (34), and Phoenix Goldwater (23). …
At the Carson/Westwood Aquatic Complex, Desert Vista (162.5) beat the field to win the annual Mesa Relays. Dobson (142.5), Red Mountain (116.5), Chandler (101.5), Westwood (91), Mesa High (79), Skyline (33), Higley (7.5) and Williams Field (5.5) also competed. Westwood (217.10) captured the diving title, outperforming Skyline (183.80), Mesa (100.50), and Dobson (62.20).
At the Paradise Valley Relay Invitational, Deer Valley (69) prevented Notre Dame (63) from sweeping both the boys and girls meets and won the highly competitive event. Host Paradise Valley finished second with 62 points, followed by North Canyon (49), Goldwater (36), Sandra Day O’Connor (26) and Peoria (7). …
At the Mesa Relays at the Carson/Westwood Aquatic Complex, Dobson (153) outscored Desert Vista (148.5) to win the 12-team tournament. Red Mountain (102) and Mesa (102) tied for third, followed by Chandler (72.5), Westwood (70), Higley (28.5), Skyline (25) and Williams Field (4.5). Desert Vista captured the diving title with 426.50 points.
At the par-72 Prescott Country Club, Cactus Shadows (302) outlasted 21 other teams to capture the title.
