Where: Brophy Prep (4701 N. Central Ave., Phoenix)
Outlook: This is the top in-season tournament of the year with several state contenders competing. Desert Vista is No. 1 in the power points as of Monday, followed closely by fellow participants Boulder Creek (No. 3), Brophy (No. 4), Gilbert (No. 6), Salpointe (No. 7) and Highland (No. 12). The Tigers are the defending champions but have a new look following the graduation of reigning Player of the Year Cody Martin and fellow star Ty Hutchins. Gilbert is 9-1 in power point matches, with its only loss coming to Mesa. The Tigers were beaten by Brophy and Desert Vista earlier this year at the Wolf Howl Invitational, but were very inexperienced at that point. Desert Vista’s only loss this season came to Hamilton, and the Thunder are 8-0 in power points matches. Brophy was the runner-up to Gilbert in last year’s state tournament and has started the power points slate 7-0. The Broncos lost to Mountain View and Desert Vista in the Wolf Howl but are otherwise unblemished. Highland likes to stay under the radar early and has not faced a very formidable schedule, so this tournament should give the other teams a good look at the Hawks. Mesa is not in this tournament and may be the current state title favorite, but the winner here will join the Jackrabbits on the short list.
