VX Roundup 12/3: Hamilton boys, Arcadia girls post soccer wins; Morales' hat trick leads McClintock

Girls soccer

Arcadia 3, Ironwood 1: Arcadia peppered Ironwood with shots in the Horizon Tournament of Champions opener, and finally got on the scoreboard with a rebound by senior midfielder Anna Workman's third goal of the season in the 14th minute off a free kick by Kate Staudenmaier. The Titans doubled their lead in the 21st minute through a terrific offensive move and strong shot by sophomore forward Megan Hawkins. Hawkins pushed the lead to 3-0 from after a perfect pass by junior midfielder Missy Dominick. The sophomore Hawkins now has seven goals in the Titans' first three games.

 

Valley Christian 5, Horizon Honors 0: After a slow in first half the Trojans bounced back from their loss to Seton Catholic. Freshman Sophia Ames scored her first goal of the season for a 1-0 lead, then added another goal in the Trojans' four-goal spree after halftime. In the second half we would finally find our rhythm and poor it on with four more goals. Sophomore Keara Schromm also scored twice and Larae Hunt added another. Senior Hannah Johnson made her first career start in goal recorded her first clean sheet with six saves, while Taylor Robertson had a strong night on defense.

McClintock 6, Maricopa 1: Thalia Morales posted her first career hat trick in the Chargers' victory.

Boys soccer

Central 3, Arcadia 2: Gio Arivzu and Rudy Escutia scored goals in the loss for the Titans.

Hamilton 3, Dobson 0:  The Huskies opened its part of the Tempe Diablos tournament with goals from Andrew Holland, Luis Manta and Gabriel Parra-Munoz.

Basha 2, Marcos de Niza 0: The Bears opened their part of the Diablos tournament with a win thanks to goals from Kevin Beck and Dallin Hazelgren, while Andy Moe assisted on Beck's goal.

Mesa 5, Desert Mountain 0: The Jackrabbits began their Pool A trek through the Diablo tournament with a win.  Scoring for Mesa were Manny Venzor, Alex Gutierrez, Jose Barerra, Victor Esquivel, and Lincoln Goodman and Venzor had three assists.  Jose Jimenez got the shutout in goal as Mesa is 3-0 on the season and plays Dobson on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in game two of pool play.

Scottsdale Christian 10, Glendale Classical 0: Cole Lenderink posted a hat trick, while Zack Swain scored twice in the Eagles' easy win. Brennan Ursu, Ryan McDowell1, Jordan Dunn, Jacob Drenth, and Josh Dunn all scored goals as well. Lenderink and Dunn each had two assists in the win.

Chandler 4, Mountain Pointe 1 (Tempe Diablos tournament)

Girls basketball

Northwest Christian 46, Scottsdale Christian 39: NW Christian opened a 24-16 lead at halftime on hung on to beat the Eagles. Anna Long led the Eagles with 18 points, Kendyll Hellestrae added 12 and Jordan Clark scored 6 in the loss.
