Prep Highlights: Mesa opens Vegas tourney with rout

The Mesa High School boys basketball team won its first-round game in the Bishop Gorman Holiday Classic in Las Vegas, 60-31, over Elko High (Nev.) Wednesday.

Aaron Fuller led the Jackrabbits (7-4) with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Jesse Westergard added 10 points. Mesa faces host Bishop Gorman in the second round at 8 p.m. today.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Phoenix Thunderbird outscored host Arcadia 27-17 in the fourth quarter to edge the Titans 56-51 in a 4A nonregion game.

David Carroll scored 19 points for Arcadia to lead all scorers.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Seton Catholic cruised to a 54-28 victory over visiting Higley to improve to 3-0 in the 4A-II East Sky Region.

Theresa Wirth led the way for the Sentinels (6-6, 3-0) with 19 points. Kayla Bustons added 11 points.

BOYS SOCCER

Host Arcadia opened 4A-II East Sky Region play with an 8-2 win over Seton Catholic. Kevin Rayes and Brandon Norman had three goals apiece to lead the Titans (5-0, 1-0).

Mountain View evened its record with its 2-0 win over host Phoenix North in a 5A nonregion game. Clinton Bardy and Scott Dothwell each scored a goal for the Toros (5-5).

David Seja and Joe Wirth each had an assist for Mountain View.

GIRLS SOCCER

Skyline shut out visiting Avondale La Joya 2-0 in a 5A nonregion game. Erica Mundekis and Veronica Sanchez each scored a goal late in the second half to give the Coyotes (5-1) the win.

Angela McNeese stopped seven shots to earn the shutout.

Seton Catholic defeated host Arcadia 2-0 in a 4A-II East Sky Region game. Eleanor Beatty and Jenna Bowers each had a goal for the Sentinels (5-2).

Lauren Chavez had seven saves to get the shutout.

Junior Crystal Maynes scored two goals in Dobson’s 5-0 victory over visiting Phoenix Alhambra. Abby Murray, Hannah Carson and Lauren Alber also scored for the Mustangs (4-4-2).

WRESTLING

Host Williams Field beat Seton Catholic 72-4 in a 4A-II East Sky Region meet. The Black Hawks (7-6, 2-0) won all but one match, and 130-pound wrestler Heath Boers improved his record to 14-1 with a pin over Cody Weldon in 47 seconds.
