5A State baseball roundup: Mountain View downs Chandler

Aaron Rhodes won his eighth game of the season, scattering eight hits in pitching Mesa Mountain View to a 4-1 baseball victory over Chandler in 5A-I winners’ bracket play at Phoenix Municipal Stadium Tuesday.

Rhodes struck out five and walked one in going the distance. Russ Tuemmler’s two-run single capped a three-run rally in the fifth that put the Toros ahead to stay.

Jose Bracamonte had three hits to pace Chandler.

Mountain View meets Phoenix Brophy in the third round of winners’ bracket play at 4 p.m. Saturday at Diablo Stadium.

5A Division I

HAMILTON 4, PHOENIX ALHAMBRA 1: Justin Lindsey struck out nine and also homered to lead Hamilton to a victory over visiting Alhambra. Jake Saylor added a pair of RBIs for the Huskies (20-11).

Hamilton will face Mountain Pointe in another losers’ bracket game at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

RED MOUNTAIN 4, YUMA CIBOLA 1: Mark Hawkenson tossed a two-hitter to help Red Mountain move on by beating host Cibola. Hawkenson also tripled and had two RBIs. Red Mountain will next play Mountain Ridge at 4 p.m. Thursday.

DESERT VISTA 10, MOUNTAIN POINTE 1: Trent Williams threw a two-hitter for the Thunder to send the Pride to the losers’ bracket.

5A Division II

DESERT MOUNTAIN 12, TUCSON FLOWING WELLS 1: Skylar Helmbeck had two doubles and two RBIs as the Wolves defeated Flowing Wells.

MARCOS DE NIZA 8, GOLDWATER 2: Jacob Morales struck out nine to lead the Padres over Barry Goldwater.

SUNRISE MOUNTAIN 3, DESERT RIDGE 2: Ben Veach threw seven innings allowing only three runs in the contest, but the Jaguars fell to Sunrise Mountain.

In other action, Paradise Valley outslugged Tucson Sunnyside 14-12; Sandra Day O’Connor defeated San Luis 9-5; Deer Valley eliminated Yuma Kofa 8-2; Centennial knocked out Peoria 3-1 and Tolleson beat Boulder Creek 4-3.
