Athlete of the week

Chanel Brown: The Chandler Valley Christian junior had 32 kills, 18 digs and two blocks in a key 3-1 victory over Horizon Honors. She followed it up with 29 kills, 18 digs and two blocks in a 3-1 win over Florence.

Week in review

Five East Valley teams were among the eight Arizona programs competing in last weekend’s Beach City Invitational in San Diego, Calif. Phoenix Pinnacle, Scottsdale Horizon, Chandler Basha, Gilbert and Mesa Mountain View were in the 48-team field that also included Phoenix Sunnyslope, Tucson Sabino and Tucson Rincon.

Mountain View finished eighth in the Gold Division.

“Overall, it was a fun time to get away,” Mountain View coach Katie Higgins said. “It was something different.

“I like that the kids didn’t know what to expect with each opponent. When we go to Westwood and Goldwater it’s a lot of the same teams. (At Beach City), we had to be mentally prepared not knowing the other team’s weapons.”

Not discouraged: After starting off 8-0, all 3-0 victories, Phoenix Mountain Pointe fell on hard times earlier this week. The Pride lost a crazy four-setter to 5A-II power Peoria Centennial by scores of 37-35, 19-25, 25-23, 26-24, then lost the region opener to 5A-I power poll leader Tempe Corona del Sol in a brief 3-0 meeting, 25-14, 25-10, 25-15.

Not to worry, said veteran coach Fred Mann, “We have a couple experienced girls on the team, but for the most part we’re pretty young.

“The same kind of thing happened to us last year. We lost a tough five-set match to Chandler and then got whipped by Corona.

“We’ve got a resilient bunch of girls. I haven’t seen them show me anything but an attitude of, 'I’ll scrap and I’ll fight.’ I have a lot of faith in this group that they’ll bounce back.”

Mountain Pointe finished as the 5A-I state runner-up last year.

Looking ahead

The Highland Tournament is today and Saturday. Fifteen teams from the East Valley will compete for midseason bragging rights — including unbeaten Phoenix Desert Vista, Corona del Sol and 4A-II’s Chandler Seton Catholic.

Both unbeaten in East Valley Region play, Mesa Westwood and Mesa Mountain View meet Monday.
