VX Honor Roll: Semifinals

A look at the top performances from the weekend's high school football state semifinals:

Garette Craig, Mountain Pointe: The senior running back had 29 carries for 170 yards as he wore down the Brophy defense in the second half.

Dominique Fenstermacher, Marcos de Niza: The cornerback had an interception against Ironwood Ridge, his fourth in the past two games and sixth in the final month of the Padres’ season.

Cole Forsgren, Williams Field:  The junior receiver caught eight passes for 189 yards and three touchdowns despite the loss to Desert Edge.

Matt Guida, Queen Creek: The Bulldogs junior tailback had 17 carries for 214 yards and thee touchdowns in a win over Nogales.

Matt Haggerty, Seton Catholic: The Sentinels' star wide receiver had 11 catches for 161 yards and three scores.

Ethan Hendricks, Hamilton: The defensive lineman recovered Caleb Peart’s forced fumble and returned it 14 yards for a touchdown to give the Huskies a 14-7 third quarter lead over Desert Ridge.

Antonio Hinojosa, Mountain Pointe: The junior quarterback ran for two touchdowns and threw for another, coming up with big plays when the Pride needed it.

Mauriece Lee, Marcos de Niza: The senior running back finished a terrific season with 154 yards rushing on 21 carries despite an ankle injury.

Cole Luke, Hamilton: The senior all-around athlete brought back a punt 50 yards to the Desert Ridge 5 to set up the team’s first score. He also led a defense which forced three turnovers and held the Jaguars to three first downs in the second half.

Mountain Pointe’s defense: Led by the secondary, the unit held Brophy quarterback Tyler Bruggman to 6-of-23 passing for 34 yards and an interception.

Queen Creek defense: The Bulldogs stifled a pair of red zone opportunities for Nogales late for their sixth shutout of the season.

Nathaniel Rodriguez, Desert Ridge: The senior running back/linebacker ran for a tough 38 yards but made several key tackles in space against Hamilton to keep the Jaguars in the game.

Sean Schweichler, Williams Field:  The senior tailback ran for 105 yards and a touchdown in the Black Hawks' loss to Desert Edge.

Seton Catholic defense: Show Low entered the semifinals averaging more than 40 points per game but was held to only 14.

Danny Siamau, Desert Ridge: The emerging running back had 24 carries for 92 yards and a touchdown against the tough Huskies defense in the loss.

Marcus Still, Queen Creek: The backup to Guida had nine carries for 115 yards and two scores.

Tempe Prep defense: The Knights held a bigger Morenci team to only 10 points, but the offense couldn't take advantage in a three-point semifinal loss.
