Athlete of the week: D.J. Johnson: A little more than a year ago, Johnson was a freshman on Mountain View's boys cross country team, running with the junior varsity.
Now, he's one of the best runners in the 5A Conference and he showed it on Saturday, winning the George Young Invitational at Sanctuary Golf Course in Phoenix, finishing the 3.1-mile course in 16 minutes, 18 seconds.

Football:
Seton Catholic quarterback Pat Miller accounted for four touchdowns — three passing and one rushing — helping the Sentinels take charge of the 3A South Region race with a 34-30 win over Safford.
Volleyball:
Whitney Phillips had 11 aces, including five in Game 2, during Desert Mountain's victory over Xavier in a key 5A Desert Valley Region match.
Diving:
Freshmen Sam Dorman (Marcos de Niza) and Molly Bock (Corona del Sol) won diving titles at the Tempe city meet at McClintock Pool Thursday.
Swimming:
Red Mountain junior Kelsy Diener won the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke at the prestigious 35-school Nike Invitational in Tucson last weekend. Diener is the defending state champion in the 100 backstroke.
Swimming:
Chelsea Courtney set a Basha school record in the 100 freestyle with a time of 1:00.34 during last week's dual meet against Skyline.
Cross country:
Xavier freshman Jessica Tonn continued her meteoric rise with a win at the George Young Invitational. Tonn held off twin sisters Nadya and Nastia Bishton of Glendale Mountain Ridge, two of the premier runners in 5A.

Saguaro at Chaparral, 6 p.m. today:
The Sabercats are fresh off winning the Bronze Pool at the Goldwater Invitational this weekend while Chaparral finished eighth in the Gold Division at the same tournament. Saguaro is a perfect 6-0 in Desert Sky Region play while Chaparral is 4-1 and trying to prevent the Sabercats from clinching the region title. Saguaro won the first meeting.

The big invitationals have all come and gone, and this week is the final light week of the season. Most teams have only a Wednesday race this week, but the city meets start next week, followed by regional races and then state.

The Scottsdale Unified School District meet features the area's five teams. Perennial powers Chaparral, Arcadia and Desert Mountain will be joined by Coronado and Saguaro.
