Ashley Kastl had 15 kills and Samantha Hodgkins added seven kills and 10 blocks in Phoenix Mountain Pointe’s 25-20, 17-25, 25-14, 25-17 win over host Corona del Sol Thursday, clinching the Central Region volleyball title for the Pride (25-9, 7-1).
Lauren Stephan also tallied seven kills and six blocks in the regular season finale for Mountain Pointe.
Mountain Pointe’s win avenged an early-season loss to Corona, in which the Aztecs rallied from 0-2 to beat the Pride.
“The win gives us a region banner, and that’s the first one we’ve had in 10 years,” said Mountain Pointe coach Fred Mann. “Hopefully, it builds some momentum.”
Cat Highmark compiled 13 kills, 20 digs and 17 assists to lead Chaparral over host Phoenix Pinnacle, 25-17, 25-27, 25-18, 25-18, in the 4A Desert Sky Region regular season finale.
Britt Danneman and Cece Twitty each had 10 kills and Katie Budolfson added nine for the Firebirds (31-11, 7-1).
Chaparral will play a tiebreaking match vs. Tucson Sahuaro Thursday at McClintock, as both teams finished 7-1 in the region, to determine the regular season champion and No. 1 seed in the region tournament.
Tayler Levi had 20 kills and Megan Toth added 19 as Arcadia defeated host Coronado, 25-11, 25-5, 25-21, in 4A East Sky Region action.
Arcadia scored 15 straight points after being down 10-11 to win the first game, then started the second game 16-0, totaling 31 straight points.
Lauren Allan had 10 kills and Jessica Samuels and Brianna O’Brien each added seven as host Apache Junction beat Tempe, 25-20, 25-16, 25-17, in 4A East Sky Region play. . . .
Paije Pearson slammed 20 kills and Amber Nechanicky tallied 18 assists as Chandler (30-10, 7-3) defeated visiting Hamilton, 25-23, 25-20, 25-19, in a 5A Fiesta Region match.
Kristin Padano and Chelsie Leshe each won two events in Horizon’s 120-58 win over Paradise Valley in a 5A Desert Valley Region meet. Padano placed first in the 200 freestyle and 100 breaststroke, and Leshe finished first in the 50 free and 100 backstroke.
Buddy Turner and Spencer Knight were both double winners for Horizon, helping to lift the Huskies over Paradise Valley in 5A Desert Valley Region action. Turner won the 200 freestyle and the 100 fly, and Knight placed first in the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke.
