The Desert Vista girls soccer team played like superwomen in going from unheralded region runner-up to 5A state champion with a 1-0 victory over Phoenix Xavier Tuesday night at Hamilton High School.

A little less than two hours later, Desert Vista’s Reid Schmitt lofted a shot over seemingly unbeatable Red Mountain goalkeeper Ryan Vickery with just more than two minutes to play to give the Thunder boys a 1-0 win over the Mountain Lions.

A few miles to the west at Tempe Sports Complex, Seton Catholic earned the 1A-3A girls championship with a 6-1 win over Tempe Prep.

But the big story of the final day of the 2004-05 prep soccer season was Desert Vista’s 5A double dip.

In the girls championship, freshman Katie Shepard came off the bench to score the game-winner in the first half and goalkeeper Amanda Maes held up against the relentless Xavier attack to earn the shutout.

In the boys championship, it was Desert Vista keeper Collin Sculley who registered the shutout.
