Desert Vista opens with big victory: Katie Shepard scored four goals and six other players also scored for Desert Vista in an 11-0 shutout of visiting Phoenix Central in its girls soccer season opener Monday.
Samantha Rall added two goals with Kim Grennan, Kayla Vaughn, Kara Miller, Kristen Kastelic and Olivia Watkins each scoring a goal of their own.
Lauren Mitchell earned the shutout.
GIRLS SOCCER
Arcadia shut out visiting Prescott 4-0 to earn its second victory of the season. Danielle Madison, Elizabeth May, Aly Bullock and Alex Warner each scored for the Titans. Jessica Hendricks earned the shutout, stopping three shots on goal. . . . Fountain Hills jumped out to a 6-0 halftime lead on its way to defeating visiting Scottsdale Christian 8-0. Greta Vogel and Alex Wright each had two goals for the Falcons. Kerri Fraizer, the goalie for the first half, and Andie Brookhouser combined for the shutout.
BOYS SOCCER
Arcadia surrendered three second-half goals that broke a 2-2 tie and gave visiting Prescott a 5-2 win in both teams' season opener. . . . Fountain Hills had three multiple-goal scorers in an 8-0 victory over visiting Horizon Honors. Tyler Keith, Kyler Alexander and Justin Stevenson each scored two goals. Ryan Barnhart earned the shutout. . . . Skyline defeated host Desert Ridge 3-1 in a nonconference match. Robert Kachala, Anthony Crum and Edward Arhin scored goals for Skyline.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Payson cruised to a 59-24 victory over host Scottsdale Christian. Rhea Casey led Payson with 21 points and six assists. Anne Munsil had nine points for Scottsdale Christian.
BOYS BASKETBALL
After allowing host Phoenix Washington to cut an 11-point lead to two in the third quarter, McClintock (3-1) went on a 17-4 run behind baskets from Jacob Owens and Parker Barrett to pull away for a 70-48 victory. . . . Jeremy Melcher-Post scored 20 points as Horizon Honors (2-0) defeated visiting Maricopa 73-55. Torey Ziska added 14 rebounds, nine points, four steals and five assists. . . . Jeremiah Salzwedel scored 30 points to lead Arizona Lutheran past host Florence 65-54. Florence’s Tramaine McCrary had 17 points.
