Mesa Mountain View survived double overtime to top Glendale Mountain Ridge 41-38 in the Highland High School Girls Basketball Tournament on Saturday at Gilbert Highland High School.
Tournament MVP Brooke Jackson of Mountain View hit a driving layup for a 36-36 tie after Mountain Ridge had taken its first lead of the game in the second overtime when Kari LaPlante scored on a putback.
Jackson then hit four consecutive free throws down the stretch to ice the game.
“You just have to calm down,” Jackson said.
“You have to relax and play your game.”
Mountain View led comfortably much of the game, but Mountain Ridge came back when the Toros tried to slow down the game early in the fourth quarter.
A 27-22 lead vanished as they turned the ball over three times in an attempt to stall.
Coach Henry Bribiescas said his Toros will need to be able to handle the pressure if they want to do well in the postseason.
“These kind of games are good early,” he said. “When you get down to contending teams it who can withstand the pressure and one the half court offense.
“We have a lot to work on.”
Mountain View opened up a 10-point lead in the first quarter as Kati Clark scored three times in the paint, twice on assists from Jennifer Schlott, who finished with eight points.
Mountain Ridge cut into the Toro lead in the third period and stayed close until Mountain View tried to pull the plug with 5:20 left in the fourth quarter.
“That’s probably not fun for the fans, but it’s very important if you are the one doing it,” Jackson said.
