Prep highlights: Basha pitchers combine for 1st no-hitter

Justin Southerland, Josh Alexander and Frankie Valles combined for the first no-hitter in Chandler Basha baseball history as the Bears beat host Maryvale, 15-0, in the second round of the Metro Region Tournament Thursday night.

Southerland was credited with the win (1-0).

Connor Burke finished the day 2-for-2 with a three-run home run. He also scored two runs for the Bears.

Josh Melendez added a pinch hit, three-run homer.

asha improves to (2-0).

 

BASEBALL

Late-game heroics led Westwood to a 5-4 win over visiting Skyline on the first day of the Westwood/Corona del Sol Tournament.

With his team down two runs in the bottom of the seventh, Ed Judie blasted a two-run homer to tie the game and send it to extra innings.

In the eighth, Ben Ochoa singled in the game-winning run in the season opener for both teams. ...

Derick McCawley hit a three-run homer to lead visiting Mountain Pointe past Desert Mountain 7-3.

Skylar Helmbeck led the Wolves with two hits in the loss. ...

Trey Warren and Jose Rojas led Paradise Valley over visiting Page, 5-4, in the first round of the Skyline Tournament. Warren hit a solo home run and Jose Rojas went 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Trojans’ starter Jordan Dee recorded his first win of the season. ...

Jake Barrett’s three RBIs led Desert Ridge past Willow Canyon, 6-5.

Barrett was 2-for-4. Ethan Chavez recorded two hits, including a double. Reliever Stephen Bier earned the win and Alex Villar recorded a save.

GIRLS TENNIS

Kacie Wagner won both her singles and doubles matches to lead visiting Gilbert past Westwood 7-2. Shelby LaSueur also won two matches to lead the Tigers in the win. ...

Amanda Moore and Michelle Marsh each won two matches to lead visiting past Dobson 7-2 on the road.

BOYS TENNIS

Tomas Cibulka won both matches to remain undefeated and lead Gilbert past visiting Westwood 9-0. Cory Edwards added singles and doubles victories in the win. ...

Jacob Steizman and Kashif Malik won two matches each to lead Dobson past host Highland 6-3.

Jesse Van Pouch won two matches for the Hawks in defeat.

SOFTBALL

Mel Becker pitched a one-hitter to lead visting Dobson past Highland 12-0.

Christina Hicks and Kim Strickland each had two hits for the Mustangs in the win. ...

Red Mountain edged host Basha 2-1 in 10 innings.

The Mountain Lions’ Sam Parlich (2-0) threw a complete game with 11 strikeouts while allowing two hits.

The Bears’ Mel Willadsen also went the distance, striking out 10.
