Host Tempe High got its first shutout in two seasons with a 16-0 win over Phoenix Cortez in a 4A II nonregion game.
The Buffaloes (1-3) rushed the ball 41 times for 220 yards, the bulk coming from quarterback Pedro Rubio who had 19 rushes for 178 yards and rushed for a pair of 3-yard touchdowns.
The Buffaloes scored all 16 points in the second quarter on the two Rubio touchdowns and a safety when the Cortez punter was tackled in the end zone. The Tempe defense held Cortez to just 190 total yards of total offense, 94 rushing and 96 passing, and forced five Cortez turnovers.
