Who's going to stop Corona del Sol's boys and Mountain View's girls cross country teams?

That's the question moving forward toward the state championship meet in early November. Both squads were led by elite runners and depth in the annual Ojo Rojo Invitational at Chandler's Tumbleweed Park on Saturday.

The boys race belonged to Corona del Sol in a landslide. The Aztecs totaled 32 points, 71 points ahead of second-place Mountain View (103). Peoria Centennial was third with 136 points, Highland took fourth at 174 and Sierra Vista Buena had 189 for fifth place.

Corona senior Nate Rodriguez repeated as the race's individual champion, again closely followed by senior teammate Ryan Normand.

Rodriguez broke the course record he set two weeks ago by one second, and finished in 15 minutes, 27 seconds. Normand ran 15:30 and Campo Verde's Lucky Schreiner was third (15:42). Mesquite's Tyler Day finished fifth.

Corona's fourth and fifth runners were Andrew Truswell (11th) and Blake Fischer (14th), respectively. All seven Corona runners finished in the top 20 as part of its dominant performance.

Huston Jones led the Toros' girls squad, which was shorthanded because of ACT testing. Mountain View still managed 73 points to better Mesa-rival Red Mountain which took second with 93 points. Corona del Sol was third with 109 points, followed by Highland (127) and Phoenix Sandra Day O'Connor (206).

Jones won the varsity girls race at 18 minutes, 48 seconds, followed closely by Highland's Lauren Ellsworth (18:52). Red Mountain's Taryn Estavillo took third place, and Mesquite's Alice Jensen finished fifth individually.

Following Jones, who placed fifth at last year's Division I state meet, were teammates Madey Brooks (eighth), Madelyn Gherkins (17th), Isabel Huish (22nd) and Kymber Palmer (25th).
