Mesa Westwood’s opportunity to qualify for the 5A-I state boys basketball tournament hinges on two possibilities after Thursday night’s prep action.
The Warriors suffered a 47-23 loss to Mesa Mountain View on Thursday. The Warriors will remain the No. 16 seed in 5A-I, but will have to win the 5A-I East Valley Region tournament next week or hope Phoenix Mountain Pointe knocks off Tempe Corona del Sol on Feb. 19 if they hope to nab the final state playoff spot.
Corona del Sol and Glendale Mountain Ridge are on the heels of Westwood in the chase for the final state playoff berth. The Aztecs lost to Chandler Basha, 56-54, and Mountain Ridge fell to Phoenix Brophy, 61-44. Westwood and Mountain Ridge are 8-10 in power-point games; Corona del Sol is 7-10.
Westwood opens 5A-I East Valley Region tournament play on Tuesday when it visits Mesa High. Westwood is the No. 5 seed in the regional; Mesa is No. 4.
Westwood’s girls basketball team, which will remain the No. 16 seed after a 50-23 loss to Mountain View, will get bumped from a state berth by a 5A-I Metro Region school unless the Warriors win the 5A-I East Valley Region tourney next week. All five Metro Region schools are below the top 16 seeds so the Metro Regional winner next week gets an automatic berth and would displace Westwood.
