VX Roundup 1/11: Mesa boys soccer shuts out McClintock; D.V. awaits

Matt Winkler earned his sixth shutout of the season, while seniors Ulises Sanchez, Andrew Christianson and Jose Avila all scored their first goals of the season as the Mesa boys soccer team defeated McClintock, 5-0, on Friday night.

Brian Perea and Alex Gutierrez also scored for Mesa. The Jackrabbits are now 5-1-1 in power rankings games and 11-3-1 overall. Mesa hosts Desert Vista in a huge game Monday night at 6 p.m. The last time these two teams met, Mesa stunned the Thunder at Desert Vista with a 2-1 victory.

Boys Basketball

Mountain View 56, Brophy 49:  Payton Dastrup finishes with 18 points and 8 rebounds as the Toros bounced back from a tough loss to Mesa earlier this week. Tim Kempton scored 34 points to lead Brophy.

McClintock 66, Westwood 43:  The Chargers had four players in double figure, led by freshman Amiri Chukuemekas' 17 points and senior Ben Cuevas' 15 points and 10 assists.

Higley 57, San Tan Foothills 26: The victorious Knights were led by Quinn Bailey's 10 points and 10 rebounds. Jamarcus Neal lead all scores with 14 points on 6-of-6 shooting for Higley.
