Four local schools were among those appealing their conference placement for the coming two-year prep block, and each was recommended for approval by their sending and receiving conference.

AIA to hear appeals on conference placement

Gilbert Perry, Chandler Seton Catholic, Scottsdale Notre Dame Prep and Phoenix St. Mary's all appealed up.

Perry applied to move from 4A to 5A, St. Mary's from 3A to 5A and Seton and Notre Dame from 3A to 4A. The 5A, 4A and 3A conferences convened Tuesday at the offices of the Arizona Interscholastic Association to make their appeals.

Other schools earning recommendations to the AIA executive board for official approval next Monday were Rio Rico (3A to 4A), Phoenix Camelback (4A to 5A), Page (3A to 4A), Flagstaff Sinagua (3A to 4A) and Tucson Salpointe (3A to 5A). Tucson Desert View was not recommended to move down from the 5A to 4A conference by 5A. The school will appeal to the AIA executive board at its meeting Monday.

The next step for 5A, after Monday's go-ahead by the AIA executive board, will be an Oct. 23 meeting in Gilbert to determine placements of the conferences' schools into 5A Division I and 5A Division II. Region alignment also is expected to be discussed at that meeting.
