Athlete of the week: Buddy Turner

on's standout swimmer set a meet record in the 500 freestyle, winning in 4:35.72 to better the old record by 6.5 seconds at the Brophy-Xavier Invitational.

BEST OF THE REST

Football: Brophy running back Ray Polk scored four touchdowns on runs that totaled 142 yards in the Broncos' 42-16 victory at Westwood. Cactus Shadows’ Phillip Aholt threw for 249 yards and four touchdowns in a 34-10 victory over Higley.

Volleyball: Highland rebounded from a tough region loss to Gilbert the week before and knocked off Hamilton and Chandler in a pair of five-set matches to stay close to the Tigers in Fiesta Region play.

Boys cross country: Horizon senior Jim Walmsley finished second at the annual Doug Conley Invitational and helped the Huskies to a second-place finish behind 4A power Rio Rico.

Girls cross country: Xavier freshman Jessica Tonn finished second at the annual Doug Conley Invitational, helping the Gators secure third place in the team competition behind Sandra Day O'Connor and Page.

Boys swimming: A trio of Marcos de Niza swimmers had three first-place finishes in the Padres' first dual-meet victory of the season. Mark Arroyo (100 backstroke, 200 medley relay, 400 freestyle relay), Rit Fetherston (100 freestyle, 200 freestyle, 200 medley relay) and Andy Young (100 butterfly, 200 medley relay, 400 freestyle relay) helped the Padres to a 110-73 win Tuesday over Mountain Pointe.

LOOKING AHEAD

VOLLEYBALL

Friday and Saturday: The annual Goldwater Festival begins at 9 a.m. Friday at four West Valley high schools — Goldwater, Mountain Ridge, Deer Valley and Greenway. Play on Saturday starts at 8:30 a.m. The finals for the gold division are Saturday night at approximately 6 p.m. at Goldwater High. Defending champion is Desert Mountain.

Saturday: The annual George Young Elite Invitational, hosted by Brophy, begins at 8 a.m. at Sanctuary Golf Course in Scottsdale.

BADMINTON

Saturday: The Dobson Invitational, the second of two major invitationals during the season. It begins at 9 a.m. at Dobson High.

SWIMMING

Thursday: The annual Tempe City Meet will be contested at 1 p.m. at McClintock Pool.
