Paradise Valley running back Michael Williams referenced a pair of former Trojans, Matt Clapp and Aazaad Muhammad, to describe the two-pronged attack the team has with him and Charles Hubbard.

Each ran for two touchdowns on Friday night, as Paradise Valley (1-2) easily rolled to a 40-14 win in their 5A Division II game at Phoenix North (0-3).

Williams, who ran for 174 yards on 22 rushes, said the way defenses must prepare for two running backs gives the Trojans an offensive attack similar to that of the 2004 team, which went 10-0 in the regular season behind running backs Clapp and Muhammad.

“Sometimes defenses key on (Hubbard) which opens things up for me, and sometimes they key on me which opens things up for him,” Williams said. “It’s a duo, just like Clapp and Aazaad a couple of years ago.”

Hubbard rolled up 148 yards on 13 attempts.

After opening its season with losses against powerhouses Peoria and Chandler Hamilton, Williams said the Trojans were pleased to finally come away with a win.

“We’ve been looking for this win since game one,” Williams said. “We really needed this one, bad.”

Paradise Valley coach Donnie Yantis credited his team’s defense for its part in the win. Through the first three quarters, North advanced past midfield on only two of its drives — one a second-quarter touchdown drive that was aided by 45 yards of Paradise Valley penalties.

He said North’s spread offense, which includes a mobile quarterback and several running backs, was a challenge for the Trojans.

“Our defensive staff did a great job preparing against all of that spread stuff that they do,” Yantis said. “And the kids . . . in the last three weeks they hadn’t really gotten it down defensively. But by Wednesday, they had it down.”
