Cave Creek Cactus Shadows shot a 324 on the first day of the 4A state girls golf tournament at the Sundance Golf Course in Buckeye Monday to post a 12-stroke lead over Tucson Catalina Foothills.
Lauren Weaver put the Falcons in position to win with her 77.
In 2006, Catalina Foothills took home the championship with a six-stroke win over Cactus Shadows. Catalina Foothills held a 17-stroke lead in last year’s tournament after the first day.
Her score also gave Weaver a one-stroke lead over teammate Beau Bremer and Vail Cienega’s Amanda Kim. The Falcons’ Reba Schneider shot 8-over to finish the day in sixth place. Scottsdale Notre Dame’s Jackie Chang gave the Saints a shot at a top-five finish with a 79 that put her in a tie for fourth place with Cienega’s Sun Park.
Chaparral finished the day in third at 344, followed by Cienega (347) and Notre Dame (364)
