Prep Highlights: Harris hands Mena 1st badminton loss of season

Emily Harris of Scottsdale Desert Mountain handed Phoenix Xavier’s Vianett Mena her first loss of the year in the 5A Desert Valley Region Badminton Tournament Championship 11-5, 9-11, 11-3 at Phoenix Mountain Pointe to take the singles crown.

Harris had lost in her both of her previous matches against Mena. Melissa Vasley of Phoenix Desert Vista and Ashley Dreas of Mountain Pointe will took third and fourth to advance to state as well.

On the doubles side Carrie Zhao and Amy Davis knocked off schoolmates Alexa Hay and Julie Simpson of Tempe Corona del Sol 15-5, 15-7 to take the doubles title. Katheryn Cantrill and Melissa LeBlanc took third from Mountain Pointe and Weslie Norris and Lindsey Hanson of Xavier took fourth as both tandems will advance to state.

BADMINTON

In the 5A Fiesta Region Badminton Tournament, Lily Spurlock of Highland finished off Chandler’s Amy Cappuccio, 8-11, 11-9, 11-8, in the finals and was crowned singles champion and clinched her spot in the state playoffs, Thursday night.. Also advancing to the state playoffs are Cappuccio, third place finisher Mandi Winters of Mesquite, and Hamilton’s Ariel Marlor round off the list. For doubles, Guadalupe Farfan and Alheli Jacquez of Chandler won the region after defeating Gilbert’s Karen Carroll and Nicole Hunt. Chandler’s Olivia Li and Kelsey Lafko and Gilbert’s Lex DeMichele and Chery Quist both advanced as well.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

Alyssa O’Dell took second place to lead Basha (29) over Seton Catholic (59) and Hamilton (66) at Tumbleweed Park in Chandler in a 2.95 mile race. Taylor Cole placed first for the Huskies with a time of 18:49 in the loss that gave the Bears its first ever City Championship.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

Basha won its first ever City Championship after Jarek Carroll, the Bears sixth runner, broke the 40-40 tie for first place with Valley Christian in the Chandler City Meet at Tumbleweed Park in Chandler. Isaac Nelson took first overall for the Eagles with a time of 15:58 in a 2.95 mile race.

BOYS GOLF

Brandon Gordon, Pat Barrett and Dillon Brewer all tied for first with a 39 to lead Deser Ridge (199) over Corona del Sol (216) and Perry (DQ) at Apache Creek Golf Course.

Individual medalist Brandt Munden shot a 3-under, 34, in Highland’s (190) victory over Hamilton (195), Gilbert (201), and Mesquite (231) at Western Skies Golf Club. Hamilton’s Blaine Hennessy finished second after shooting a 36.

Higley’s golfers finished with the top four scores of the match with Kollin Bellville leading all shooters with a 1-under, 35, in the Knights (145) dominating win over Tempe (188), and Tolleson (202). Higley’s 145 is the lowest total score in a par 36 event in school history.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Notre Dame handled visiting Cortez in three games, winning 25-6, 25-8, 25-17. Chelsey Thompson led the Saints (29-2) with nine kills and three digs, while Sarah Svorinic added 29 assists and three kills. JS

Valley Christian beat visiting Camp Verde 25-10, 25-13, 25-17. Alaina Bergsma had 12 kills for the Trojans (32-10, 11-1) in the win and Chanel Brown added nine kills and 15 assists.
