The South Region title is on the line tonight in the Bears’ homecoming game.
A Coolidge win locks up the region title, but Safford can snatch it away with
“I told the guys right after the game against Sahuarita that homecoming
becomes a much bigger deal,” Coolidge coach Carlo Hernandez said. “They are excited for homecoming and that the game means something.”
The game will come down to how well Safford’s defense can slow down the Coolidge offense. The Bulldogs are coming off their first shutout of the season, 14-0 against Globe.
Safford will try to keep the ball away from Coolidge with a ball control offense. Safford is led by Manny Jurado, who has 528 yards and seven touchdowns. Six Safford ball carriers have more than 100 yards on the season.
Coolidge’s defense has been stout all season and it is finally back at full speed. Linebacker Ian Gillespie returned last week against Sahuarita and joins a unit that is anchored by middle linebacker Jovante Waggoner and rover Jaime Casillas, who are the top two tacklers on the squad.
Quarterback Jesse Wheeler, who has thrown for 1,018 yards and 14 touchdowns, has been efficient all season. His favorite target has been T.J. White, who has 408 receiving yards and 685 rushing yards.
