Address: 4201 E. Knox Road, Phoenix

Records: Corona del Sol 3-4, 0-1 Central; Mountain Pointe 3-4, 2-0

Outlook:

Mountain Pointe appears to be more and more dangerous each week, as the Pride have turned a 1-3 start into a first-place spot atop the 5A Central Region standings.

Knock off Corona del Sol this week and coach Karl Kiefer’s squad can look forward to a showdown next week against Desert Vista with the region crown on the line. That may be Mountain Pointe’s only way into the postseason, as the Pride currently sit 19th in the 5A-I power point ratings.

But the Aztecs can’t afford to lose this game either. Corona del Sol is 20th in power points, also at 3-4. The Aztecs’ wins, including a blowout over a turmoil-ridden Tucson program and a 7-3 win over Desert Mountain, haven’t been all that impressive, even if the team is playing better lately.

Aztec quarterback Chase Larsen, despite his three interceptions in a 14-7 loss to Desert Vista last week, has been among the area leaders in passing all season, but it’s Corona’s defense that has stood tall of late. The Aztecs have given up a combined 27 points in their last two losses.
