Prep Roundup: Corona wins its division at Nike II event

Corona del Sol defeated Flagstaff Sinagua 63-38 in the third-place game of the Purple Division of the Nike Tournament of Champions II Saturday at Chandler High School.

Kim Pestalozzi scored 14 points for the Aztecs (6-11), 11 coming in the first half. Pestalozzi scored 3 points in the first two minutes of the third quarter before twisting her ankle and leaving the game.

Natalie Sargent also scored 14 points for Corona to go with her 13 rebounds and 3 steals. Ashley Espinoza had 10 points and 3 assists in the win.


Gilbert held Payson to five second-half points en route to winning the championship game of the Payson Holiday Tournament 47-31.

Justine Cooper led the Tigers (13-3) with 19 points. Donielle Cooper, who scored eight points, took home the tournament’s most valuable player award...

Amy Garland scored a total of 26 points on her way to being named to the Payson Holiday Tournament All-Tournament team.

Garland’s 16 points were not enough against Mesa as the Knights fell 64-32. In Higley’s other game, the Knights defeated Estrella Foothills 45-28. Garland scored 10 points in the win...

Mountain View took third place in the White Division of the Nike Tournament of Champions II, defeating Santa Margarita (Calif.) 52-48.

Jennifer Schlott led the Toros (14-1) with 14 points and also had 4 assists. Brooke Jackson scored 13 points and had 5 steals in the win...


Gilbert had three players score in double figures as it defeated Red Mountain 62-37 to take third place in the Gilbert Holiday Invitational.

Elliot Clark, Daniel Carter and Elliott Fletcher each had 10 points in the Tigers victory...

Scottsdale Christian defeated Life Christian (Wash.) 70-52 in the final game of round robin play of the Cactus Jam at Scottsdale Christian.

Steve Boyce scored 12 points for the Falcons (5-7) in the win.


Kayla Baughan scored the winning goal in the shootout as Desert Vista beat Gilbert 2-1. Lindsey Benitiz tied the game for the Gilbert in the second half to send the game to overtime. Katie Shepard scored on a header to give Desert Vista the early 1-0 lead in the first half. Katlyn Piotroski had the assist on the goal.
