The turn of events bordered on the ridiculous.
Brophy’s unbelievable 54-28 comeback win on Friday to knock off top-ranked Mountain Pointe had players and coaches on both sides shaking their heads.
Just about everyone at Phoenix College's Hoy Field had trouble comprehending how the Division I contest between two top-five teams got out of hand in the Broncos’ favor so quickly, considering the Pride (5-1) played just about a perfect first half to take a 21-10 lead.
“I’ve never seen anything like that,” Pride defensive coordinator Jeff Decker said. “It was over in an instant. We had everything working. We were making plays and then, boom, we are looking at the scoreboard and it didn’t seem right.”
Brophy (5-2) scored 32-straight points to build a 39-21 lead late into the third quarter when Mountain Pointe turned the ball three times on four plays that led directly to 21 points.
Mountain Pointe opened the second half by getting two first downs but then Andrew Curtis made a leaping interception in the middle of the field.
After Marche Dennard scored the first of his three second-half touchdowns, the first play of the next drive saw the Pride’s Antonio Hinojosa (13 of 25 for 230 yards, 3 INTs) throw quickly to his left and the Broncos’ Robert Relf jumped up from the defensive edge and returned the interception inside the Pride 10-yard line to set up Dennard’s 6-yard score.
“Something told me to stay back and read his eyes,” Relf said. “I knew he was going to come my way.”
The Pride fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Brophy’s Devon Allen finished off the drive with an 8-yard sprint around the right side for a 32-21 lead. After Mountain Pointe punted on its next drive, Dennard (28 carries, 265 yards) pretty much put it away with a 57-yard scoring run for a 39-21 lead.
“He was animal so we just kept feeding him,” Brophy quarterback Tyler Bruggman said. “The O-line did a great job. We kept coming at them and they couldn’t stop it.”
Brophy scored 22 points in a manner of 3 minutes and 2 seconds of game time, and 29 points in 4:36.
“We just kept on battling and took advantage of the turnovers and we beat a very good team,” Broncos coach Scooter Molander said. “This one is up there in terms of the momentum switch. I get back to the fact that we are starting get our legs back (after the three games in 10 days) and now it’s paying off.”
Just about no one would have drawn that conclusion in the first half when Mountain Pointe gained 294 yards of offense (95 yards of penalties) in 24 minutes.
Garette Craig (194 yards from scrimmage, 3 TDs) and Thomas Warren (12 carries 100 yards) were churning out yards, Hinojosa was finding his targets and the defense was limiting the state’s top quarterback as Bruggman was 4 of 10 for 34 yards.
For five-and-half quarters, the Pride was the state’s top ranked team and sat 24 minutes of football away from its fourth win over a top five team.
“We were doing what we do,” Pride offensive coordinator Eric Lauer said. “We were feeling good and then a few minutes into the second half and we were shaking our heads and trying to figure out what happened.”
