State Volleyball Roundup: Chandler downs Mountain View

Chandler defeated visiting Mesa Mountain View (36-11) in four games, 25-11, 17-25, 25-10, 25-22, Thursday in the quarterfinals of the 5A-I girls state volleyball tournament.

Paije Pearson and Kelly Nuneviller combined for 27 kills for the Wolves (17-2). Pearson had 17 kills and Nuneviller added 10. Pearson and Ashley Trotten also each had 14 digs for Chandler.

The Wolves move on to face Phoenix Xavier at Chandler Hamilton at 3 p.m. Saturday in the semifinals.



Sam Hodgkins had 13 kills and five blocks and Ashley Kastl added nine kills and 17 digs as the host Pride (18-2) advanced to the semifinals with a convincing victory over the Lancers. Emily Lentz added 27 assists for Mountain Pointe, which will face Gilbert at 1 p.m. Saturday at Hamilton.



Kayley Mundell had 17 kills, but it was not enough as the Pioneers (9-10) fell to visiting Ironwood Ridge.

GLENDALE IRONWOOD DEFEATS HORIZON, 23-25, 26-24, 25-13, 25-9: The Huskies fell to the host Eagles despite Leah Flatness’ 19 kills, 19 digs and one ace. Kaitlin Halverstadt added nine digs and six kills and Michele Anderson had 23 digs and one ace for Horizon (23-13).

In other games, Tucson Rincon beat Anthem Boulder Creek, 16-25, 25-16, 25-20, 25-16.


GLENDALE CACTUS DEFEATS SAGUARO, 25-6, 25-6, 25-22: Ashley Aubrey had seven kills and one block in a losing effort for the Sabercats (13-6) against the host Cobras.

CAVE CREEK CACTUS SHADOWS DEFEATS TUCSON SABINO, 20-25, 25-17, 25-16, 23-25, 15-9: Falcons middle blocker Shannon Mikan led the Falcons to a spot in the semifinals with her 17 kills against the visiting Sabercats. Mikan received help from Brittanie Morey, who added nine kills, and Sammy Geiger, who added 11 kills and 40 assists.

The play of the outside hitters allowed Cactus Shadows (32-9) to score the first three points of the final game to grab momentum and put away Sabino. Cactus Shadows will face Cactus at 1 p.m. Saturday at Chandler Perry High School.

CHAPARRAL DEFEATS TUCSON CANYON DEL ORO, 23-25, 25-21, 25-10, 25-12: The host Firebirds (36-7) recovered from a slow start to advance to the semifinals with a victory over the Dorados. Chaparral will face Phoenix Sunnyslope at 3 p.m. Saturday at Perry.

In other games: Sunnyslope beat Glendale Sandra Day O’Connor, 25-17, 25-15, 19-25, 25-18.


NOTRE DAME DEFEATS COTTONWOOD MINGUS, 26-24, 25-18, 25-19: Rebecca Slegers had 15 kills, one solo block, five digs and three aces as the host Saints (41-3) advanced to the semifinals with a dominating victory over the Marauders. Cassie Uribe added 11 kills, a solo block and three aces for Notre Dame and Sarah Svorinic had 36 assists. The Saints will face Sahuarita 9 a.m. Saturday at Perry.

SETON CATHOLIC DEFEATS HIGLEY, 25-16, 25-12, 22-25, 25-11: Molly Barlow had 18 kills as the Sentinels (18-1) advanced to the semifinals with a victory over the visiting Knights (22-15). Ellen Harty and Tori Bath also combined to add 21 kills. Seton will face Tucson Amphitheater at 11 a.m. Saturday at Perry.

TUCSON AMPHITHEATER DEFEATS ARCADIA, 30-28, 25-21, 22-25, 25-16:

Erin Bradley had 12 kills, three blocks and an ace to lead the host Panthers (34-6) past the Titans (22-9).

In other games, Sahuarita beat Flagstaff Sinagua, 25-27, 26-24, 25-19, 25-15.
