VX Roundup 1/22: Red Mtn. boys hoops beat shorthanded Dobson

A big second half for the Red Mountain boys basketball team helped the Lions top its city neighbors.

The Lions used a 22-11 advantage in the third quarter to grab the lead and held on in the fourth for a 58-52 win over shorthanded Dobson on Tuesday night.

Travis Meeker led the Lions with 15 points, Diego Hernandez scored 10 and both Colton Plourd and Derek Rojas each added nine in the victory. Kodi Jutice led Dobson with 23 points, which played without leading scorer Jaron Hopkins.

Boys Basketball

Seton Catholic 50, Campo Verde 45: A game that went down to the wire saw Seton score 20 points in the fourth quarter to pull out the late win in a Division II matchup. Freshman Jake Rueter led the Sentinels with 13 points, while Sam Engelbert added 10 and Josh Jimenez chipped in with seven points in the win. Campo was led by Devante Walker's 13 points and Zack Patton with 10.

Girls Basketball

Valley Christian 81, Scottsdale Christian 19: VC took control from the start and never relented against their Christian school rivals. Four Trojans finished in double figures: Tana Kemmer led all scorers with 21 points, Ashley Koch and Abby Labahn both scored 15 and Mara Kemmer added 10 in the victory. Anna Long led SCA with 11 points.

Queen Creek 47, Higley 39: The Bulldogs used a 20-11 advantage after one quarter and a 13-8 edge in the fourth to secure the win. Makaily Worthington led all scorers with 24 points for Queen Creek, while Higley was led by senior guard Sydnie Martindale's 21 points.

Boys Soccer

Mesa 3, Westwood 0: The Jackrabbits kept their playoff hopes alive with the win. Jose Barrera scored his 11th and 12th goals of the season while Lincoln Goodman scored off a Chris Chaidez assist in the fourth minute to put the Jackrabbits on the board. Mesa hosts No. 4 Corona del Sol in a huge match for the Jackrabbits' playoff chances. Mesa is 13-5-1 overall and 7-3-1 in Power Rankings matches.

Scottsdale Christian 5, Scottsdale Prep 1: Cole Lenderink and Jacob Drenth each scored two goals for SCA, and Jordan Dunn added the fifth. Drenth also had three assists and Lenderlink had two as SCA got to use both Jack Johnson and Karsten Kem in goal for a change of pace.
