Ted Rico got his wish a year a later and Jake Lee doubled up.
Rico, a Combs sophomore, won his first state wrestling title – after finishing third last year – when he defeated Phoenix Thunderbird’s Ryan Felipe 3-1 for the Division III 113-pound title on Saturday at Tim’s Toyota Center.
Lee, a San Tan Foothills senior, won his second title with a 4-3 in overtime for the Division IV state title.
Division III had several other area placers in the Williams Field duo of Gabriel Cobb (113, fourth, Div. III) and Chandler Follett (145, fourth) along with Higley’s Drew Aho, who finished fifth at heavyweight.
Campo Verde finished fifth in the Division III team standings with six placers as Dayton Dunham (106, third), Zachary Sanchez (120, sixth), Austin Doll (126, fifth), Parker Hawk (138, fifth), Steve Stryker (152, fifth) and Finton Connolly (HVY, sixth) all found a spot on the podium.
The Division IV tournament produced two area placers.
Seton Catholic’s Alex Farrar finished third at 170 in Division IV and Canyon State’s George Alaniz finished sixth at 182.
