Cody Pennington had 18 points and Parker Rasmussen added 16 as Desert Ridge handed Queen Creek its first loss of the season, 55-47, in a boys basketball game on Thursday night. The Bulldogs entered the game 12-0 and ranked No. 9 in Division II. The Jaguars (11-7) used a big second quarter to take an eight-point lead into halftime. Blake Williams led Queen Creek with 14 points.
Division I No. 3 Brophy held off Chaparral, 54-48, for its 12th win in the past 13 games. The Broncos take on Mountain View on Friday in a rematch of last year's 5A Division I championship game, won by the Toros.
Mountain View defeated Mesa, 53-34, behind Camyn Boone's 16 points. Jackrabbits guard Desmond Medder led all players with 17 points. Mountain View led by six points heading into the fourth quarter before blowing the game open.
Freddie Lash scored 18 points and Gilbert erupted for 31 points in the second quarter to cruise past Mesquite, 72-55. Sami Bzai had 28 points for the Wildcats.
Marcus Tipton had 32 points as Dobson used a strong fourth quarter to pull away from Westview for a 62-54 victory.
Red Mountain rolled past Mountain Ridge, 61-44, behind Justin Park's 12 points, 14 rebounds and seven blocks, while Highland won its fourth straight by knocking off Skyline, 60-25.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Rebecca Tilley scored 14 points as Mesquite cruised past Gilbert, 61-32.
Mariah Willadsen had 24 points as Red Mountain defeated Mountain Ridge, 78-31.
St. Mary's, one of the top-ranked teams in the country and No. 1 in the state, easily downed Central, 56-12.
