Prep highlights: Marathon match helps Lions edge Pride

Mesa Red Mountain’s Carly Benshoof defeated Kathryn Cantrill, 3-6, 7-5, 10-7, in a 2½-hour girls tennis match to help the Mountain Lions to a 5-4 victory over host Phoenix Mountain Pointe on Tuesday.

Benshoof also won the decisive doubles match with partner Hilary Valenzuela over Cantrill and Christine Johnson.

Valenzuela also won her singles match for Red Mountain (6-0), defeating the Pride’s Zoey Mamos, 6-1, 2-6, 10-8.


Kelly Kurzman homered and was 2-for-3 with two RBIs for McClintock in a 8-0 victory over Queen Creek. Mark Anderson struck out seven en route to the shutout for the host Chargers (3-2).

Joey Bachman scored on a single by Trey Warren with two outs in the bottom of the seventh as Paradise Valley beat Arcadia, 6-5. Ben Bamford added two singles and an RBI for the host Trojans (5-0).

Derek Mendoza went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs as Red Mountain beat host Glendale Ironwood, 13-2. Mark Hawkenson added a three-run home run in the fifth inning for the Mountain Lions.

Chandler defeated Tucson 11-2 in the Scottsdale Quarterback Club Tournament at Highland High School. Michael Handel earned his first win of the year and also went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs. Tim Barraza added three hits with a double and an RBI for the Wolves.


Host Gilbert beat Sierra Vista Buena, 25-16, 25-11, 25-16, in a 5A nonregion match. Marshall Gillespie had 13 kills and Kyle Webb finished with six kills to lead the Tigers (1-0).

Mountain View dropped its first two games to host Corona del Sol before rallying to win its season opener, 18-25, 18-25, 27-25, 25-19, 15-6. The team used blocking from Kyle Chapman and David Phelps to work its way back into the match. Chapman and Phelps each finished with six blocks. The team recorded a total of 22 blocks. Robert Skousen had 15 assists and Michael Ray added six kills for the Toros.

Marcos de Niza defeated visiting Desert Ridge, 25-18, 25-11, 27-25. Jason Barkac and Jake Wekell combined for 25 kills for the Padres (1-0). Wekell finished with 14 kills and Barkac added 11.


Highland defeated Chandler, 6-3, behind the singles play of Chris Fasulo, a 6-0, 6-0 winner, and Chase Adams, who won 6-1, 6-3.

Gareth Dunn won in singles, 6-2, 6-1, and later teamed with Daniel Larsson to win in doubles, 8-5, for host Corona del Sol, which beat Desert Mountain, 7-2.


Rae Bell struck out 13 in five innings for Chaparral en route to a 13-1 win over Cactus Shadows. Mackenzie Popescue went 2-for-2 with a home run and four RBIs for the visiting Firebirds (2-0).

Meredith Whitney went 4-for-5 with a double and an RBI for Desert Mountain in a 12-3 win over Mountain Pointe. Whitney also pitched four innings for the win and Dillan Firestone collected four RBIs for the visiting Wolves (6-2).

Danielle Munoz went 2-for-2 with an RBI for the Pride.
