Give that lineman an Academy Award. Phoenix Brophy senior Michael Tree has been one of the better defenders in the East Valley this season. He’s also one of the better actors.

Before the playoffs began, he starred in a mock video, “Mike Tree: Campus Linebacker,” a spoof of the popular “Terry Tate: Office Linebacker” Reebok commercials.

Part One — www.youtube.com/watch?v=cxrJsFW-uNI — was put together before the state quarterfinals matchup against Tempe Corona del Sol.

Part Two — www.youtube.com/watch?v=slQ0A171yRU — was made before last Friday’s semifinal game against Chandler Hamilton.

Part Three is expected to be filmed this week before Saturday’s 5A Division I state championship against Phoenix Desert Vista. Stay tuned.

MATTHEWS MENDING

Thunder receiver/defensive back Luke Matthews suffered a sprained ankle and didn’t play in the second half in their win over Mesa Red Mountain.

On Monday, Desert Vista coach Dan Hinds said Matthews was moving around with one crutch, but added that without the crutch, Matthews was “practically walking without a limp.”

Matthews is expected to play.

FERTILE SEED

The Thunder are the fourth team in 11 years of power rankings in 5A to reach the championship game despite a double-digit seed.

Desert Vista is the 11th seed this year. Previous double-digit seeds to reach the title game were Phoenix Brophy (13 in 1998), Glendale Ironwood (11 in 2002) and Glendale Mountain Ridge (16 in 2004). A double-digit seed has never won the championship. Desert Vista beat Brophy in 1998, Mesa Mountain View beat Ironwood in 2002 and Chandler Hamilton topped Mountain Ridge in 2004.

HEADING TO NATIONALS

Phoenix Xavier’s Jessica Tonn and Scottsdale Horizon’s Jim Walmsley finished in the top 10 of their respective races Saturday at the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships West Regional at Mountain San Antonio College, in Walnut, Calif.

Tonn, a sophomore, placed third overall. She finished 18 seconds behind Jordan Hasay, the West champion from Mission College Prep in California who won the regional for the third consecutive year. Tonn was joined in the top 10 by Glendale Mountain Ridge seniors Nadya and Anastacia Bishton.

Walmsley, a senior, placed sixth. He was 26 seconds in back of West champion German Fernandez, from Riverbank High in Riverbank, Calif.

The top 10 finishes earned them spots in the national finals Saturday at Morley Field, Balboa Park in San Diego.

TITANS RELOCATED

Construction of two new gymnasiums at Phoenix Arcadia means the Titans basketball teams won’t play any games on campus this season. Instead, Arcadia’s home court for both the boys and girls squads will be nearby Ingleside Middle School, 5402 E. Osborne Road. The girls have also used Phoenix Xavier High School as a designated home site, and that’s where they will be for today’s game against Gilbert Higley.

CARR COMMITS

Scottsdale Chaparral senior running back/cornerback Deveron Carr committed to Arizona State. He will play corner in college. Carr scored the Firebirds’ only points in Friday night’s 12-6 loss to Scottsdale Saguaro on a 75-yard touchdown run.
