State basketball roundup: Seton Catholic boys build lead, then hold off Payson

Mike Harty scored 17 points to lead Seton Catholic past visiting Payson 62-55 in firstround action of the 3A state boys basketball tournament Wednesday at Northern Arizona University’s Walkup Skydome.

Seton Catholic led by 22 points at halftime, but Payson managed to outscore the Sentinels (25-3) in the fourth quarter 23-15 to cut the lead to seven points.

Jeff Haasis and Brandon Butler each scored 13 points for Seton. The Sentinels will face Window Rock in the quarterfinals at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Skydome.

In other 3A boys games, Chinle beat Sedona Red Rock 56-53 and Winslow beat Goodyear Estrella Foothills 64-40.

1A BOYS

In Wednesday night’s action, Mayer Orme defeated Fredonia, 67-38; Pima beat Ajo, 71-52; Grand Canyon topped Phoenix Valley Lutheran, 51-42; Seligman defeated Surrey Garden, 52-21; St. David defeated Duncan, 60-59; Mogollon topped Salt River, 51-48; Green Fields Country Day downed Clifton, 52-43; and Valley Union defeated Superior, 92-89 in overtime.

3A GIRLS

SETON CATHOLIC 48, PAYSON 17:Lindsey Warburton and Emily Radzik led a balanced attack with nine points each as the Sentinels (22-8) opened state tournament play with an easy win over the Longhorns at NAU’s Skydome.

Six different players hit 3-pointers for Seton, which took a quarter to adjust to a pair of 6-foot players in the post for Payson before pulling away. Seton will face Ganado in the quarterfinals at 9 a.m. Friday at NAU.

In another game, Ganado beat Sedona Red Rock, 71-39.

1A GIRLS

In other games, Pima beat Tucson Green Fields Country Day School, 47-45; and Joseph City defeated Phoenix Valley Lutheran, 70-32.
